Happy National Teddy Bear Day!

Happy National Teddy Bear Day!

Have you ever wondered when the first teddy bear was made? I mean, how did a big animal that can weigh from 125 to 1,500 pounds become such a popular and cute plushie?

This all started with a woman named Margarete Steiff. Margarete was born on July 24th, 1847, in Giengen an der Brenz. She contracted polio at 18 months old, which left her with paralyzed legs and lasting pain in her right arm. Family, friends, and neighborhood children helped her get to school by pulling her in a handcart.

Despite Margarete being confined to a wheelchair, she never lost her lively spirit and remained social by organizing games for the neighborhood children. She fought through the pain in her hand and finished her training to become a seamstress at age 17.

Her perseverance led her to found Margarete Steiff GmbH, also known as the Steiff Company. The first item created was a felt elephant called “Elefäntle” that was inspired by a pattern she saw in a magazine in 1880. This was also the founding year of the Steiff Company. The first catalogue also included monkeys, donkeys, horses, camels, pigs, mice, dogs, cats, rabbits, and giraffes.

In 1893, the Margarete Steiff felt goods factory was born. The factory employed 4 sewists and 10 homeworkers. The toys were also presented at the Leipzig Toy Fair.

In 1895, Steiff established a foreign business relationship with Harrods, London (a toy company in the UK).

I am sure that by now, you are wondering: what does this have to do with teddy bears? I am getting there, I promise.

Before talking about the teddy bear, we must first talk about Richard Steiff.

Richard was born on February 7th, 1877.

In 1894, he sketched the first drawings of the bear during his studies at Nilsche Tiergarten in Stuttgart.

In 1897, Richard Steiff, Margarete Steiff’s nephew, joined the company after attending the School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart. His animal sketches are used as a basis for the company’s creations.

In 1902, he developed the world’s first jointed teddy bear. It was called the “Bear 55 PB” (55 cm standing, P for plush, and B for movable).

That same year, another person also invented the teddy bear. Morris Michtom, a Russian‑Jewish immigrant, and his wife, who were living in Brooklyn, New York, saw a political cartoon by Clifford K. Berryman. The cartoon depicted Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree. Rose made a small bear cub plush that was labeled “Teddy’s Bear.” Morris and Rose owned a candy and novelty shop. Morris reportedly received Roosevelt’s permission to use this name.

The plushie was displayed in the shop window and sold quickly. With the demand so high, Michtom later founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company in 1907. (This later became the Ideal Toy Company.) This company mass-produced teddy bears and became one of the largest doll and toy manufacturers in the United States.

The original 1906 Michtom teddy bear is preserved at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Steiff started calling its bears teddy bears in 1906, also inspired by the political cartoon.

In short, the teddy bear was invented independently, at the same time, by Richard Steiff and Morris and Rose Michtom between 1902 and 1903.
